Matthew B. Sotelo passed away on June 21, 2026, at the age of 44, following complications from a medical incident he suffered in October 2025.
Born on September 18, 1981, in Pasadena, California, to Ismael “Mike” Sotelo and Rosalinda “Sally” Sotelo, Matt was a proud Pasadena native whose life was defined by creativity, compassion, authenticity, and a deep love for family and friends. From an early age, his artistic talent set him apart, leading him to attend the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), where he developed a passion for creative expression that remained with him throughout his life.
Matt brought energy, dedication, and heart to everything he did. In recent years, he found fulfillment as a coach at UFC Gym in Rosemead, where he became a mentor, coach, and friend to many. Whether through fitness, conversation, or simply showing up for the people in his life, Matt had a gift for connecting with others and making them feel supported. Alongside his work in fitness, he continued to pursue his love of art and creativity.
In the early 2000s, Matt met Annie Nguyen, and together they shared 20 years of friendship, adventure, travel, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Their bond remained one of the most important relationships in his life. Together they welcomed their daughters, Royce in 2017 and Sloan in 2019, who quickly became the loves of his life. Fatherhood was his greatest joy, and he treasured every opportunity to spend time with his girls, creating memories both big and small that they will carry with them always.
Matt was preceded in death by his father, Mike, who passed away in 2001.
He is survived by his daughters, Royce and Sloan; his mother, Sally; his brother, Mark Sotelo, and sister-in-law, Meghan Bowles Sotelo; Annie Nguyen, the mother of his children and one of his closest lifelong friends; and a large community of extended family members, friends, colleagues, clients, and loved ones who were fortunate to know him.
Those who knew Matt will remember his warmth, humor, generosity, and unwavering loyalty. He had a way of making people feel welcome, understood, and valued. His infectious laugh, quick wit, and genuine spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Even in passing, Matt continued to give to others. As an organ donor, he helped save lives and offered hope to families he never had the chance to meet—a final act of generosity that reflected the way he lived his life.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Altadena, California. Funeral services will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by burial at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
Though his time here was far too short, Matt’s love, spirit, and the example he set for his daughters will remain forever in the hearts of all who loved him.
